Looking for a job can feel like a marathon, and at some stage, you’re going to hit the wall. Why? Because you are overwhelmed and stressed out with the hundreds of:
Hundreds of job postings you’ve had to leaf through.
Hundreds of job applications, cover letters and resumes you written.
All the scheduling trying to fit in interviews and informational interviews.
All the different hoops that the employers want you to jump through.
I’ve been on the job searching merry-go-round and hit the wall, so I know how you feel. I know what it is like to have to apply for multiple short-term contracts just to stay employed. Can you imagine having to do this throughout your career? Every couple of months, you’ve got to fight and apply for another contract. More resumes, more cover letters, more interviews, and it’s never-ending. This scenario is very stressful.
How do you cope with this kind of stress? My answer is by practising self-care, and here are four suggestions you can put in place to give you some very needed time out from your job search. This way, I hope, you will avoid hitting the wall.
Tip 1: Go and explore!
There’s a whole big world out there, so use it to your benefit. You could:
Check out a new café your friends recommended.
Visit a park nearby for a walk or sit under a tree and read.
Take your dog for a walk. Pets need exercise too!
Love history? Go to a museum and indulge yourself.
Walk down your street and wave to your neighbours or check out their gardens.
The message is… Get out of your head and away from your computer. Go out and explore, even if it’s for five minutes.
Tip 2: Take care of your health!
We all know that we need to look after our health. Yes? But, if you are like me, you get distracted by a long list of tasks and your health is neglected. I don’t have a new and fantastic way to improve your health in five minutes a day. I do know that just doing the basics is enough. So….
Exercise regularly and keep a check on your diet.
Make an effort to relax and unwind so you remain focused and energised throughout your job search.
Tip 3: Find a social outlet!
I love being at home in my own space with all my personal things around me and could happily stay closeted like this. But, I make an effort to get out of my comfort zone and nurture my relationships with friends, family and the wider community. Why? Relationship building is important. Mixing with other people improves your networking and communication skills. This will help you with your interviews. Also, you never know who you might meet with the perfect job lead for you.
Tip 4: Schedule personal downtime!

In today’s electronic world, we are bombarded with information all day at high speed. Before we know it, it’s the end of the day, and you’re still sitting at your computer working or applying for another job. Did you know that your chair could be hurting you? If you’re interested, this article tells you why – “Sitting Is The New Smoking”.
Does this sound like your routine? It certainly sounds like mine, so I use my Outlook calendar to remind me to get up and go do something like:
Sweeping the floor!
Putting another load of washing on!
Taking my dog for a short walk!
Standing on the back verandah and taking in the scenery!
Tinkering with your car!
Now! Why have I gone to the trouble of talking about looking after yourself? You need strength and stamina to get to the end of a successful job search – physically and emotionally.
You will have more focus and drive to achieve your goals.
You will be more determined to go after the job of your dreams instead of just any job.
When you are being interviewed for your “dream” job, you will make a strong impression on the employer because you have looked after yourself. This will increase your odds of being the candidate offered the job, which is the goal of all job seekers.
